About a year ago, I started a new journey after quitting my job without a clear plan. I realized that my previous job wasn’t right for me and I needed to find a new direction. Leaving my career was unexpected, and I’ve spent the past year learning about myself, facing both successes and failures, which helped me grow.
I remember talking to a former coworker who retired earlier than she planned. I asked her, “How long until I feel comfortable again?” She said, “About a year.” Back then, it felt like a long time, but now I think it might take even longer for some of us.
A few months ago, a friend suggested a book to help me deal with uncertainty. The book, What to Make of a Life, Cliffs, Fog, Fire, and the Self-Knowledge Imperative, is by Jim Collins. It shares research based stories of well-known historical and famous people, showing how knowing yourself better helps you handle life’s challenges.
Jim Collins describes life using four main ideas:
Self Knowledge Imperative
Understanding your talents and what drives you.
The Fire
Finding your deep passion for your work.
The Cliffs
Facing sudden crises that push you to change.
The Fog
Feeling lost during confusing times.
The key points I took from this book are about Cliffs and Fog. I see my unexpected job loss as a Cliff, and the uncertainty I feel as the Fog. Everyone faces Cliffs; it’s not a question of if, but how you respond. It’s important not to make big life changes during these crises, as they can cause more problems. The Fog shows that feeling uncertain is normal, and you shouldn’t blame yourself for it. During tough times, be kind to yourself and keep moving forward. With time, you can find stability and a new direction.
So, have I figured out my life? Not entirely. But I’ve made progress in understanding what I enjoy and what I’m good at, and how to use those strengths for a fulfilling life. I also don’t feel rushed to have all the answers immediately. It could take years to feel settled, and even then, something unexpected might happen. At least I know now that no matter what does happen, I will find my way.
